Cabin Time in New Hampshire: Upgrades, Hikes, and Old-School Charm

September 4-5,2025

My friend from ski patrol, Paulette, has an absolutely adorable cabin in Wilmont, New Hampshire. I’ve been itching to get back there and check out the hikes in the area, so when our schedules finally aligned, I hit the road.

Paulette was busy working on massive cabin upgrades — the kind of projects that take weeks and look like a full-time job — but she still had time to host me. And I have to say, there’s something charmingly rustic about her place. She even still has the outhouse… yes, she has indoor plumbing, but somehow the little outside facility adds a quirky, nostalgic touch that makes the cabin feel like a proper mountain hideaway.

We found some great local trails while we were there. Our favorites included the Bog Mountain Trail, which is part of the Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway (SRKG), as well as the New London Trails and the Webb Forest Trail. We did two hikes to check them out and are convinced Paulette could probably walk out her back door and hit the Bog Mountain Trail without ever leaving the cabin property. No moose sightings, unfortunately, but plenty of Moose Crossing signs to keep our imaginations running wild.

Even though we didn’t see wildlife on this trip, just being in the crisp New Hampshire air, exploring hidden trails, and swapping stories by the cabin made it feel like a true getaway. Sometimes the best adventures are less about mileage and more about charm, friends, and a little touch of old-school cabin life.
