Trip day 1-Saturday February 21

I hit the road on Day 1 at 2:00 p.m., officially kicking off this trip. There’s always something exciting about that first stretch of highway—the feeling that anything could happen and the adventure is finally underway. My first stop was in Dagsboro Delaware to say hello to Aunt Suzy and Uncle Gary. I pulled in around 5:00 p.m., which gave me just enough time for a quick visit and some yarn before heading back out on the road. It was a nice little pause before the longer drive south. From there, I continued toward my first campsite at Oregon Inlet Campground in Nags Head, North Carolina. The drive stretched into the evening, and by the time I arrived around 10:30 p.m., the weather had decided to welcome me in dramatic fashion. The wind was absolutely howling and the rain was coming down in sheets. It turned into one of those nights where you sit for a moment and wonder if you should even step outside. Overnight, the storm kept up with crazy winds and torrential rain battering the van.To add to the adventure, the nearby bathrooms were closed—along with the showers—and the temperature had dropped enough to make it feel pretty cold out there. Not exactly the cozy campground arrival I had imagined, but sometimes that’s how travel begins. A little wild weather, a late-night arrival, and the reminder that the road always has its own plans. And just like that, Day 1 was in the books.
